Application Extensions

As Android evolves, greater restrictions are being imposed on device file system access in the name of improved security. That means private application storage for applications like eLibrary Manager may no longer be accessible from your device. Of course you should always be able to access those file system folders and files from a computer, but not being able to do the same from your device can be an inconvenience, or worse than that if you don't have access to a computer.

A number of features and application extension mechanisms for eLibrary Manager have been designed with the expectation that you have access to application file system folders to make use of those features. Some examples are:

• Manage online dictionary definitions for use in dictionary lookup from ePub Reader.
• Manage HTML named entity mapping definitions to allow ePub Reader to render named entities (like "—" as "—", for example). Most named entities are not natively supported in the Android WebView component used by ePub Reader.
• Manage inline style to tag mapping definitions to allow eLibrary Manager to render HTML styles more completely in the Book Information description views. When book info description includes inline styles for things like bolding or italics, the Android TextView does not honour those styles. This mapping results in inline styles being injected with equivalent tags which TextView does support.
• Manage mime type mapping definitions. This feature is used when launching external eBook readers to identify the type of book being opened.

Making use of the above features prior to eLibrary Manager version 5.2.0 required that you are able to access specific file system folders to maintain mapping files that provide the required definition details. With version 5.2.0, however, tooling is now available to manage those mapping files through a user interface.
