The Calibre Documents Provider application is a standalone application that extends the Android platform, enabling access to remote book files from your calibre Content Server. Although you may find this functionality useful as-is with the ability to access remote book files on your Android device through the standard Android Files file explorer application, this application is most useful when used in conjunction with eLibrary Manager.
eLibrary Manager Integration Available in Both Basic/Full
All versions and types of eLibrary Manager from version v4.0 on (both free and paid) provide integration with Calibre Documents Provider allowing you to load remote books into your eLibrary Manager library and read them without requiring that book files be physically loaded on your device.
eLibrary Manager Integration Available in Full Only
Of course, this capability requires that eLibrary Manager and your calibre Content Server can communicate over your network. If your server is not running or your device is not connected, then remote reading will not be possible. The Full eLibrary Manager application provides the ability to download a local copy of selected remote book files to allow for offline reading. A predefined book list called "Downloaded" also allows you to see what books you've downloaded for easy management (i.e. remove downloaded copies when you are done reading to clear up local storage).
The Full eLibrary Manager application also allows you to merge book information updates directly into your remote calibre library by exporting those updates to calibre.
